About Autism Awareness Training
This service is provided by a Certified Special Education Teacher (M.Ed.) to help community members better understand and support individuals with autism. For schools, training is available for elementary (3rd grade – 5th grade), middle (6th grade – 8th grade) and high school (9th grade – 12th grade) students and staff to become more aware and understand the challenges that students with autism can face. The goal of the program is to encourage students to accept, include and support their peers with autism in school and in after-school activities. It is also designed to provide teachers with information and strategies so they can continue to support, encourage and foster inclusive relationships among their students throughout the school year. This program is also designed to support or complement any anti-bullying program that might already be in place at a school. It includes all or some of the following:
- Interactive presentation to students and teachers
- Pre and post survey of effectiveness
- List of strategies for teaching students with autism
- List of activities and resources available for the teacher to use and incorporate throughout the school year
Who Receives Autism Awareness Training
Autism Awareness Training can be provided for a wide variety of entities, including schools, first responders, and community centers. When working with schools, this program is designed for students 3rd through 12th grade and teachers/school staff that have a classmate/student with autism in their classroom/school. We will work with the school administration, teachers and parents to assure that we provide the appropriate content and approach so as to meet the school and students’ needs. The program can be presented in one school period (45 -55 minutes) and can address a single classroom at a time or if appropriate, it can be provided to a larger group of students by combining classes (usually two same grade level classrooms).
